From @ntyni

This is a bug report for perl from ntyni@debian.org,
generated with the help of perlbug 1.41 running under perl 5.28.1.

It would be nice to have a way to disable the Storable build time
stacksize probing and use some 'safe defaults' instead, either hardcoded
or passed to Configure.

Probing system properties at build time is not ideal for binary
OS distributions such as Debian, where the build system can vary
significantly from the system the resulting binary gets run on.
The build systems are typically more powerful than many end user systems,
particularly in the embedded world.

The probing also has implications for build reproducibility: having
the stack size limits of the build system affect the resulting build
conflicts with the aim of generating bit-by-bit identical build results
on different systems with the same toolchain.

I see cross compiling is already an exception in blead, perhaps that
part could be extended to a Configure argument or an environment variable
that could be activated by downstream packagers where desired?

(This is also https://bugs.debian.org/914133 )

Many thanks for your work on Perl!

I see cross compiling is already an exception in blead, perhaps that

variable
that could be activated by downstream packagers where desired?

I'll remove build-time probing entirely.

I'll leave the stacksize tool in the distribution, but it won't be generating lib/Storable/Limit.pm anymore.

It would be nice to have a way to disable the Storable build time
stacksize probing and use some 'safe defaults' instead, either
hardcoded
or passed to Configure.

Probing system properties at build time is not ideal for binary
OS distributions such as Debian, where the build system can vary
significantly from the system the resulting binary gets run on.
The build systems are typically more powerful than many end user
systems,
particularly in the embedded world.

The probing also has implications for build reproducibility: having
the stack size limits of the build system affect the resulting build
conflicts with the aim of generating bit-by-bit identical build
results
on different systems with the same toolchain.

I see cross compiling is already an exception in blead, perhaps that
part could be extended to a Configure argument or an environment
variable
that could be activated by downstream packagers where desired?

I'll remove build-time probing entirely.

I'll leave the stacksize tool in the distribution, but it won't be
generating lib/Storable/Limit.pm anymore.

Like this.

Applied as 2a0bbd3.

Thank you for filing this report. You have helped make Perl better.

With the release today of Perl 5.30.0, this and 160 other issues have been
resolved.

Perl 5.30.0 may be downloaded via:
https://metacpan.org/release/XSAWYERX/perl-5.30.0

If you find that the problem persists, feel free to reopen this ticket.
