From frank.wiegand@gmail.com

This is a bug report for perl from frank.wiegand@gmail.com,
generated with the help of perlbug 1.36 running under perl 5.10.0.

s///e generates wrong error messages under some circumstances:

The "near" is definitely wrong here:

  % perl -E 's//(/e'
syntax error at -e line 1, near "(}"
Execution of -e aborted due to compilation errors.

Here too:

  % perl -E 's//)/e'
syntax error at -e line 1, near "{)"
Execution of -e aborted due to compilation errors.

[NB: Do you see the wrong part in the second line? It should be »-E«,
not »-e«.]

Here the error message is wrong:

  % perl -E 's//$/e'
Missing right curly or square bracket at -e line 1, within string
syntax error at -e line 1, at EOF
Execution of -e aborted due to compilation errors.

I got the same error using »@«, »%«, »*«, »&«.

The following looks better:

  % perl -E 's//{/e'
Missing right curly or square bracket at -e line 1, within string
syntax error at -e line 1, at EOF
Execution of -e aborted due to compilation errors.

This one might be okay too:

  % perl -E 's//}/e'
Bad evalled substitution pattern at -e line 1.

Bad and good:

  % perl -E 's//]/e'
syntax error at -e line 1, near "{]"
Bad evalled substitution pattern at -e line 1.

And another one: Why do some error messages start with a capital letter
(»Missing ...«) and some not (»syntax error ...«)?

Thanks, Frank
