While fuzzing perl v5.29.8-110-gf5f909b1e1 built with afl and run
under libdislocator, I found the following

m$\x{100}(?[\x$

to cause an assertion failure

perl: dquote.c:226: _Bool Perl_grok_bslash_x(char **, const char
*const, UV *, const char **, const _Bool, const _Bool, const _Bool,
const _Bool): Assertion `(send) > (*s)' failed.

This is a regression in blead, bisect points to:

commit 6dd641e
Author: Karl Williamson <khw@cpan.org>
Date: Wed Mar 13 11:42:15 2019 -0600

  dquote.c: Use UTF8_SAFE_SKIP

Otherwise malformed input could cause this to return a pointer outside
  its buffer

This is fixed by
commit 0b97d15
Author: Karl Williamson <khw@cpan.org>
Date: Tue Mar 19 12:37:04 2019 -0600

  PATCH: [perl #133937] Assertion failure

This recently added assertion actually caught an error, which is a
potential read beyond end of buffer. This doesn't actually happen in
this case because this is a regular expression pattern, and the toker
makes sure there is a trailing NUL (that isn't counted).

The solution is to check the bounds before reading.
