This is a bug report for perl from jim.avera@gmail.com,
generated with the help of perlbug 1.40 running under perl 5.20.2.

use warnings FATAL => 'all'
seems to make the parser get confused by use of undeclared
variables; it eventually complains, but about some other
perfectly-valid code later in the program.

I'm not complaining because Perl can't always pinpoint the
exact location of syntax errors. But the fact that the
warning FATAL => 'all' pragma makes the compiler worse
is suspicious.

My Perl is v5.20.2 and it says
  $ perl try.pl
  String found where operator expected at try.pl line 15, near "f2 "arg1""

So it looks like the issue has already been fixed in v5.22.0

Thanks.

This is a bug report for perl from jim.avera@gmail.com,
generated with the help of perlbug 1.40 running under perl 5.20.2.

"use warnings FATAL => 'all'" immediately terminates the process
when a warning occurs. During compilation, this causes the compiler
to die after printing the first diagnostic, which is unhelpful when
the first diagnostic is spurrious, as is often the case.

For example, a mis-spelled variable name often causes subsequent,
valid code to get compilation errors before the undef-var warning
is printed. When warnings FATAL=>all is in effect, this final warning,
the -only- useful diagnostic, is effectively suppressed.

A solution might be to defer termination until after the end of compilation
when a FATAL warning occurs during compilation (perhaps setting a flag
checked in the UNITCHECK phase).

That way, all the usual diagnostics would be printed, so the user can see
what the problem really is.

#!/usr/bin/perl
use strict; use warnings;
use warnings FATAL => 'all'; # comment out to allow correct diagnostic

$misspelled = 123;

#
# thousands of lines here...
#

sub myfunc(@) { }
sub bar { myfunc 1,2,3 } # the only diagnostic is on this line

This is a bug report for perl from jim.avera@gmail.com,
generated with the help of perlbug 1.40 running under perl 5.20.2.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
"use warnings FATAL => 'all'" immediately terminates the process
when a warning occurs. During compilation, this causes the compiler
to die after printing the first diagnostic, which is unhelpful when
the first diagnostic is spurrious, as is often the case.

For example, a mis-spelled variable name often causes subsequent,
valid code to get compilation errors before the undef-var warning
is printed. When warnings FATAL=>all is in effect, this final
warning,
the -only- useful diagnostic, is effectively suppressed.

A solution might be to defer termination until after the end of
compilation
when a FATAL warning occurs during compilation (perhaps setting a
flag
checked in the UNITCHECK phase).

That way, all the usual diagnostics would be printed, so the user can
see
what the problem really is.

#!/usr/bin/perl
use strict; use warnings;
use warnings FATAL => 'all'; # comment out to allow correct
diagnostic

$misspelled = 123;

#
# thousands of lines here...
#

sub myfunc(@) { }
sub bar { myfunc 1,2,3 } # the only diagnostic is on this line

I strongly disagree with your request for a change in functionality. We already document why you should not be using "use warnings FATAL => 'all'" *at all*.

From 'perldoc warnings' on perl-5.22.0:

#####
NOTE: FATAL warnings should be used with care, particularly "FATAL => 'all'".
...
While some developers find fatalizing some warnings to be a useful defensive programming technique, using "FATAL => 'all'" to fatalize all possible warning categories -- including custom ones -- is particularly risky. Therefore, the use of "FATAL => 'all'" is discouraged.
...
etc., etc.
#####

I don't see any reason to encourage people -- implicitly or explicitly -- to use "use warnings 'FATAL => all'".

Thank you very much.

I'm sorry you feel so strongly that you want to make FATAL extra
difficult for users to use during development, when code is changing and
compilations are likely to fail, and when it is most important to find
warnings and fix them. Intentionally causing people extra work just
seems mean.

FATAL is not depreciated, so I don't think refusing to make it more
usable is warranted. Any customer-facing application must not emit
cryptic warnings. If warnings start happening after a system upgrade
which changes Perl, then it is important to find and fix them during
testing before customers can see the goofs. I'm not saying everyone
wants new warnings to crash their app, but that is one way to ensure
that they get immediate attention, so a bad impression does not continue
to be made for a long time. I think the choice depends on whether
Perl updates are well controlled (or not) in a particular situation, and
how easily a developer can fix FATALized warnings in the situation at
hand. Please do not force a policy or choice about this as it depends
on factors which are different for different users, and thus not under
your control.

I don't know if Jim saw this in the ticket this was merged into, but:

tony@mars:.../git/perl$ ./perl -Ilib ../127323.pl
Global symbol "$misspelled" requires explicit package name (did you forget to declare "my $misspelled"?) at ../127323.pl line 5.
Number found where operator expected at ../127323.pl line 12, near "myfunc 1"
  (Do you need to predeclare myfunc?)
syntax error at ../127323.pl line 12, near "myfunc 1"
Execution of ../127323.pl aborted due to compilation errors.

which changed in:

commit 594b6fa
Author: Lukas Mai <l.mai@web.de>
Date: Sun Oct 12 19:01:09 2014 +0200

  treat fatal warnings after syntax errors as syntax errors
