Just fyi: The FAQ for perl5-porters gives

  http://www.xray.mpe.mpg.de/mailing-lists/perl5-porters/

as the list archive. But that archive appears not to have been updated since
around November 2013.

Somewhat related question: There's another archive at

  http://grokbase.com/g/perl/perl5-porters

which is up to date. But I've noticed that it nearly always takes a few hours
(sometimes overnight) before messages I (and others) have posted to the list
appear there. If this is just "the way things are", ok, no big deal, just
wanted to bring it to your attention.

I suspect there are other folks who are nonplussed about the length of time
it takes list emails to appear on the above grokbase URL. For example, see

  http://grokbase.com/t/perl/perl5-porters/148aymrzq8/test

which seems to be someone complaining/curious/head-scratching about the same
long delay as mentioned above.

Anyway, just bringing it to your attention.

Thanks,

Glenn

We don't have anything to do with that archive, as far as I know.

When posts don't go to the list promptly it's because they ended up in manual moderation which usually takes 12-48 hours.

Ask Bjoern Hansen via RT <perlbug-followup@perl.org> [2014-08-18 16:59:26 -0700]:

years of posts: http://www.nntp.perl.org/group/perl.perl5.porters/1999/08.html

Yes, I came across that too and have been using it.

My intent in mentioning the other one (www.xray.mpe.mpg.de) was just to point
out that that URL is the one given in the official FAQ message:

  ======================================================================
  Is there a web archive?

  Yes, there is, and it's at http://www.xray.mpe.mpg.de/mailing-
  lists/perl5-porters/.
  ======================================================================

Perhaps the FAQ message could be updated. It doesn't mention the nntp.perl.org
archive at all, except as related to retrieving weekly summaries.

I would like to move this ticket toward resolution.

Glenn: Where is the FAQ from which you are quoting?

I ask because when I ack the Perl 5 core codebase for "Is there a web archive", I get nothing. And the core codebase is the most that we directly control.

The information at lists.perl.org looks up-to-date to me:
http://lists.perl.org/list/perl5-porters.html

Thank you very much.

I'd say the link is http://www.nntp.perl.org/group/perl.perl5.porters/ , not http://lists.perl.org/list/perl5-porters.html , since the question is where is the archive, not where is the list.

Let me track down where I got that FAQ from, I'll let you know.

Iirc, I think I simply followed the instructions received in the response
to the 'subscribe' reply, which provided various pointers to list info (the
FAQ being one of them). But let me verify this and I'll get back to you shortly.

Here's the sequence of events leading to that FAQ:

Excerpt from the auto-reply received when I subscribed (which was 09-Aug-2014):

  =======================================================================
  --- Administrative commands for the perl5-porters list ---

  I can handle administrative requests automatically. Please
  do not send them to the list address! Instead, send
  your message to the correct command address:

  To subscribe to the list, send a message to:
  <perl5-porters-subscribe@perl.org>

  To remove your address from the list, send a message to:
  <perl5-porters-unsubscribe@perl.org>

  Send mail to the following for info and FAQ for this list:
  <perl5-porters-info@perl.org>
  <perl5-porters-faq@perl.org>
  =======================================================================

I then sent a message to <perl5-porters-faq@perl.org> as instructed above,
and received the following, which contains the quote snippet from the ticket.

The AUTHORS section gives the 'last updated' date as 2003, so that could
be the problem.

Let me know if you need any more info

  Hi! This is the ezmlm program. I'm managing the
  perl5-porters@perl.org mailing list.

  I'm working for my owner, who can be reached
  at perl5-porters-owner@perl.org.

  NAME
  p5pfaq - The perl 5 porters FAQ

  Administration
  Help! How do I unsubscribe?

  Send mail to <perl5-porters-unsubscribe@perl.org>, and await a response.
  Once you reply to the response, you'll be unsubscribed.

  If that doesn't work, find your subscription address - it'll be in the
  Return-Path header of any mails from p5p to you. If that's
  God@heaven.af.mil, send mail to <perl5-porters-unsubscribe-
  God=heaven.af.mil@perl.org>.

  I'm not subscribed - how do I subscribe?

  Send mail to <perl5-porters-subscribe@perl.org>. To specify
  God@heaven.af.mil as your subscription address, send mail to <perl5-
  porters-subscribe-God=heaven.af.mil@perl.org>.

  How do I retrieve old messages?

  Every message you get from perl5-porters will have an autogenerated
  >>Return-Path line. For instance: <perl5-porters-return-5523-
  God=heaven.af.mail@perl.org>

  The number in the middle, 5523, is the sequence number. To get the
  message with a particular sequence number mailed to you, send mail to
  <perl5-porters-get.5523@perl.org>.

  To a range of messages mailed to you in a digest, for instance, the
  messages with sequence numbers from 4902 to 4950, send mail to <perl5-
  porters-get.4902-4950@perl.org>. You may request a maximum of 100
  messages in a single digest.

  More general help on list management can be retrieved by sending a mail
  to <perl5-porters-help@perl.org>.

  Is there a web archive?

  Yes, there is, and it's at http://www.xray.mpe.mpg.de/mailing-

  perl5-porters is too big! Is there a digest?

We don't have anything to do with that archive, as far as I know.

Btw, while I was figuring out where the FAQ came from, I also re-discovered
where I got that grokbase URL mentioned above, and why I assumed (incorrectly)
that it was administered by p5p: Because it's mentioned in the head URL list
of archive sources at

  http://lists.perl.org/list/perl5-porters.html

(last item).

Not sure if this is relevant or not, just giving my rationale for (mis)assuming
it was a p5p-administered database.

I suspect this is more of a problem with lists.perl.org than with perl5-porters.

I'm glad it was reproducible, because this has been a monumentally bad week

OK.

Is there an action item for me here (e.g., submitting a follow-up ticket to
another organization)? As a rank newcomer to p5p, I really don't have a clear
idea of how p5p relates to lists.perl.org. So if you need me to folllow up
'externally' so to speak, please point me to the proper place for doing so
and I'll be happy to comply.

Following the instructions found here:
http://lists.perl.org/data.html

... I have just submitted a patch for the JSON data for the perl5-porters list. (I just went through this with a different mailing list, so it was no sweat.)

This patch deletes the reference to sending an email to "perl5-porters-faq@perl.org". This won't disable that email address, but it will give us some time to figure out:

(a) Do we want a "p5pfaq" at all? (By "p5pfaq" I mean the content of an email that would be sent upon request from the email address above.)

(b) If so, what should be its content? In particular, in what way should it be different from 'pod/perlhack.pod' or something already in core?

(c) What is the mechanism that generates that email response?

Glenn, others: Comments welcome!

Thank you very much.

I think we want a high level summary of what goes on on p5p, how to participate, and what to expect. I think it would also be good to again review the way that perlhack and other documents play out for new porters.

This is something I'd be happy to help with at YAPC or at some small hackathon, but I can tell you that I don't see myself getting work done on this on my own.

ezmlm, probably. We'd have to coordinate with the list managers. Probably: make sure we have a document worth sharing, then figure out how. :)
