When Text::Wrap is using $huge='wrap', it hits an assertion with an
unbreakable word that contains an '='. For example, running:

  junk=$(perl -e 'print "a" x 80')
  for i in '' = a=; do
  echo "==> trying $i\$junk"
  perl -MText::Wrap=wrap -le 'print wrap("", "", $ARGV[0])' "$i$junk"
  done

yields:

  ==> trying $junk
  aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
  aaaaa
  ==> trying =$junk
  This shouldn't happen at /usr/share/perl/5.18/Text/Wrap.pm line 84.
  ==> trying a=$junk
  This shouldn't happen at /usr/share/perl/5.18/Text/Wrap.pm line 84.

This looks related to the regex a few lines above that specifically
handles '=' as a negative look-ahead. It seems to work OK with
$huge='overflow', which uses a different regex, but I'm not sure I
understand the differences.

Text::Wrap is listed as 'upstream=cpan', so I think this ticket belongs at
https://rt.cpan.org/Dist/Display.html?Name=Text-Tabs%2BWrap

(However, its bugtracker is listed as 'unknown' -- this should be fixed.)

I've tried the code submitted by the original poster back in 2013 on various versions of perl (installed via perlbrew) from perl-5.20.3 to perl-5.38.0. I cannot reproduce the error messages reported.

$ for i in '' = a=; do echo "==> trying $i\$junk"; perl -MText::Wrap=wrap -le 'print wrap("", "", $ARGV[0])' "$i$junk"; done
==> trying $junk
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
aaaaa
==> trying =$junk
=aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaa
==> trying a=$junk
a=aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaa

Text::Wrap is under active maintenance upstream on CPAN, so if this is still a problem it should be reported at the URL as @karenetheridge suggested (though I suppose you could also try a GH issue as well. Am closing this ticket with the sendToCPAN label.

@jkeenan Thanks for taking a look at it. I think this bug has since been fixed, and is the same as the one in https://rt.cpan.org/Public/Bug/Display.html?id=79766. Bisecting in Perl/perl5 with:

perl -e 'require "./cpan/Text-Tabs/lib/Text/Wrap.pm"; print Text::Wrap::wrap("", "", "a=" . "a" x 80)'

shows the fix appearing in 83aea42. So closing this issue is the right thing.
