The INSTALL file (on both 5.005_03 and perl5.005_57) says​:

  Also, be careful to check your architecture name. Some Linux systems
  (such as Debian) use i386, while others may use i486, i586, or i686.
  If you pick up a precompiled binary, it might not use the same name.

Now, this may be true of some versions of Debian, however, my installation
of Debian uses 'i686-linux' as architecture name. This makes the above
statement confusing. Perhaps the qualification "(such as Debian)" is
better left off.
