Created by lvirden@cas.org

This is a bug report for perl from lvirden@cas.org,
generated with the help of perlbug 1.29 running under perl v5.6.0.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
I rsync'd the development perl today and found a problem. When I attempted
to do a "make nok" (because the makefile says:

makefile:# If you want to report test failures, use "make nok" instead.

I get:
$ make nok
./miniperl configpm configpm.tmp
sh mv-if-diff configpm.tmp lib/Config.pm
File lib/Config.pm not changed.

  Making utilities
make[1]: Entering directory `/ldatae/gnu/perl-5.6.0/utils'
make[1]: Nothing to be done for `all'.
make[1]: Leaving directory `/ldatae/gnu/perl-5.6.0/utils'
./perl -Ilib utils/perlbug -nok -s '(UNINSTALLED)'
"perlbug -ok" and "perlbug -nok" do not report on Perl versions which
are more than 60 days old. This Perl version was constructed on
Thu Mar 23 00:45:54 2000. If you really want to report this, use
"perlbug -okay" or "perlbug -nokay".

It appears that perlbug is looking at the installed version of perl for the
date info, not the uninstalled version of perl.

No, it's looking at the date stamp of patchlevel.h.

Admittedly perlbug doesn't work that well for reporting bugs in
development versions.

I wouldn't call this a 'high' severity problem because as explained
above this is a problem between the nature of development releases
(patchlevel.h doesn't get updated during the development phase) and
besides, as the perlbug message says, using -okay or -nokay would
bypass the said sanity test.

Yes, this could probably be fixed, either by making perlbug
wiser about development releases, or making the development
(patching) cycle automagically update patchlevel.h (it must
be automagic, otherwise it won't happen).

From The RT System itself

patchlevel.h now includes
local patches for the
development releases, so
this should be fixed.
