justanother:simon ~ % perl -le '$foo + //'

Good.

justanother:simon ~ % perl -le '$foo /a/'
syntax error at -e line 1, at EOF

Good.

justanother:simon ~ % perl -le '$foo //'
Search pattern not terminated at -e line 1.

Huh?

From @mjdominus

justanother:simon ~ % perl -le '$foo //'
Search pattern not terminated at -e line 1.

Huh?

THe first slash is a division sign. The follwoing slash is the start
of a pattern matach against $_. You would be dividing the value of
$foo by the result of the pattern match, except that yo unever
finished writing the pattern.

Search pattern not terminated at -e line 1.

Huh?

rick $ perl -le '$foo /m/'
Search pattern not terminated at -e line 1.
rick $ perl -le '$foo /s/'
Substitution pattern not terminated at -e line 1.
rick $ perl -le '$foo /y/'
Transliteration pattern not terminated at -e line 1.

I think this is as clear as it needs to be. Unless you want it to say
"after division".

From @iabyn

In 5.9.x, this no longer gives the misleading error.
