I could not reproduce this behavior.

I installed blead and then the most recent version of 'cpanm' on top of that perl.

#####
$ ./bin/perl -v | head -2 | tail -1
This is perl 5, version 27, subversion 4 (v5.27.4 (v5.27.3-95-g45d6710)) built for x86_64-linux
#####

I then used that 'cpanm' to install Event-1.26 successfully (apart from some C-level warnings during XS compilation). See attachment.

Thank you very much.

Did you build a perl with -DDEBUGGING?

No, I did not. You are correct that the breakage occurs on -DDEBUGGING builds, as my subsequent re-build confirms.

Thank you very much.

The asserts added by this patch detect behaviour considered undefined behaviour in the C standard.

In this case, calling memset() with a NULL pointer (hidden in a Zero() macro) at line 272 in c/unix.c

There is a cpan ticket for this:

Closing the perl ticket.
