From @cpansprout

The bareword ::CORE::foo is deparsed as CORE::foo, which is a syntax error.

$ perl5.16.0 -MO=Deparse -le 'print ::CORE::foo'
BEGIN { $/ = "\n"; $\ = "\n"; }
print CORE::foo $_;
-e syntax OK

$ perl5.16.0 -MO=Deparse -le 'print CORE'\''foo'
BEGIN { $/ = "\n"; $\ = "\n"; }
print CORE::foo $_;
-e syntax OK

The same thing happens with CORE'foo

$ perl5.16.0 -MO=Deparse -le 'print CORE'\''foo'
BEGIN { $/ = "\n"; $\ = "\n"; }
print CORE::foo $_;
-e syntax OK

Thank you for filing this report. You have helped make Perl better.

With the release yesterday of Perl 5.28.0, this and 185 other issues have been
resolved.

Perl 5.28.0 may be downloaded via:
